Construction companies face new collusion charges

The long-standing allegations were partly settled last year when 15 construction companies paid a combined R1.46-billion in fines to the Competition Commission.

A spokesman for the commission, Mava Scott, said the watchdog had evidence of collusion in bidding for contracts for the construction of World Cup stadiums.

Scott said the commission had evidence against Wilson Bayly Holmes-Ovcon, Stefanutti Stocks, Basil Read and Group Five. Some of the companies have paid fines but disputed some of the allegations.

Group Five did not accept last year's settlement and therefore did not pay a fine. It said yesterday it welcomed the opportunity to answer the allegations about World Cup projects.

The other construction companies were not immediately available for comment.

The companies will argue their cases before the Competition Tribunal, which makes the final decision on anti-trust issues, in the coming weeks.
