MS unveils Skype for Business

Skype for Business will bring together the familiar experience of Skype with the security, compliance and control users have come to expect from Lync, says Microsoft.

Microsoft has unveiled Skype for Business, the next version of Lync with a new client experience, new server release, and updates to the service in Office 365 – all of which will be available in the first half of 2015.

"Skype is the simple and easy way for people to connect and communicate, and Skype for Business is yet another proof point of how Microsoft is capable of harmonising technology between work or at home, to help us get some of our scarcest commodity back – time," says the company in a statement

According to Microsoft, Skype for Business will bring together the familiar experience of Skype with the security, compliance and control users have come to expect from Lync. "

As Lync is today, Skype for Business will be a separate client, server and service than Skype."
A few key updates in Skype for Business include:

Familiar Skype icons for calling, adding video and ending a call;

-       Call monitor from Skype, which keeps an active call visible in a small window even when a user moves focus to another application; and
-       Video calling and the Skype user directory that make it possible to call any Skype user on any device.
