Cape Town - A digital leak of documents from State Security Agency operatives shows how South Africa became vulnerable to foreign espionage after the end of apartheid, a report said on Monday.
The cables, obtained by news organisation Al Jazeera, span a period from 2006 to the end of 2014, and include detailed briefings and analyses written by the operatives.
The operatives speak of their correspondence with agents at the US’s CIA, the UK’s MI6, Israel’s Mossad, Russia’s FSB, Iranian spies and dozens of others at agencies from Asia to the Middle East.
The SSA’s spokesperson Brian Dube told News24 the agency was aware of “this project”.
“Our policy that regulates the management of all classified documentation remains in place. That is all really that we can say.”
Al Jazeera says the files show the murky world of espionage at the “more humdrum, day-in-the-office level”.
One cable relates to matter about “parking signs” outside an embassy.
